From Father Varghese’s Desk

When we hear in the Gospel today—especially in Gospel of John 13:34—Jesus giving us a “new commandment” to love one another, we may quietly wonder: what is truly new about this? Has love not existed since the beginning? Indeed, love is as old as creation itself. Yet Jesus gently deepens and transforms our understanding when He adds, “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.”

Here is the heart of what is new: we are no longer called simply to love—but to love as Christ loves. This is a love that is self-giving, sacrificial, patient, and merciful. It is a love that reaches out to the forgotten, forgives without counting the cost, and remains faithful even in suffering. It is the love revealed most fully in the life, ministry, and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Naturally, we may feel overwhelmed by such a calling. How can our human hearts measure up to such divine love? Yet the Good News reassures us: we are not left to do this on our own. In the second reading from Book of Revelation, we hear a beautiful promise: “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will always be with them as their God.” This is not a distant hope, but a present reality—God walks with us, strengthens us, and pours His grace into our hearts.

The love we are asked to give is first given to us. Day by day, the Lord fills us with His compassion, His mercy, His patience, and His peace. From this abundance, we are invited to love others—not perfectly, but faithfully. So, as we continue our journey of faith, let us not be discouraged by our limitations. Instead, let us be consoled and strengthened by the abiding presence of God. In moments of weakness, He is our strength; in moments of doubt, He is our reassurance; in moments of struggle, He is our peace. May our parish community be a living reflection of Christ’s love—where kindness is freely shared, forgiveness is readily offered, and every person is welcomed with dignity and care. And may we always remember- we love because He first loved us, and His love will never fail.

Have a Good Week and God Bless,
